The main purpose of the SGW (Serving Gateway) is to secure the communication networks between vehicles, so the SGW acts as a firewall between two vulnerable parts, thus preventing security problems in the communication networks. These are telematics, radio unit and DLC.

Telematics: Telematics enables the collection, processing and transmission of vehicle-related data. It is used to collect and transmit vehicle tracking systems, driving data, location information, vehicle performance and other telematics data. The telematics component is used to transmit data from the vehicle to the SGW or to transmit data from the SGW to the vehicle.

Radio Unit: The radio unit is used to provide wireless communication in vehicles. It usually includes the vehicles' antennas, signal receivers and radio frequency components used for data communication. The radio unit is an interface that realises data communication between the vehicle and the SGW. DLC (Data Layer Control): DLC stands for data layer control. This component is responsible for managing data traffic, protocol processing and routing data packets to the correct destinations. It can be considered as the control plane of the SGW and performs control functions such as network management, routing decisions and protocol operations. These components interact with each other to fulfil different functions.

SGW divides the vehicular communication network into two parts, private and public. In the public domain the communications are telematics and DLC. The rest of the units below are considered private and it is impossible to access these private communication units without authorisation. Therefore, SGW is not like the communication modules we are used to. The SGW is like a fence that prevents citizens from accessing the modules. SGW does not allow to run any drivers or components directly, SGW only allows authenticated messages on private networks.
